Erstaunlich gut. 2-2 Konfiguration, Kunstledersitze.

My flights were booked well in advance to the flights by Kintetsu International Express (KIE), Tokyo and Frankfurt, on behalf of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, a Japanese government agency which invited me as their fellow to conduct research in Japan.\r\n\r\nAs I am very tall (not only by Japanese standards: 1.94 meters), I requested your ground personnel in Frankfurt on March 07, 2008 to provide me with a seat in the emergency exit row. Similar requests had been met positively by dozens of international airlines which I have flown with in former times. Therefore, I was very surprised that the ground personnel in Frankfurt were not able to meet my request. The following flight experience was even worse than my expectations, as leg space in the Economy Class of this JAL airplane was less than in any other comparable airplanes I have used so far. \r\n\r\nWith the experience of this flight in mind, I addressed JAL via Kintetsu International Express (KIE), Tokyo branch, immediately after my arrival in Tokyo to make sure that on the flight back to Germany on March 25, 2008 I would have access to a more appropriate seat. The travel agency was told that it was too early to make this special seat reservation but that the request was registered and that I should tell the ground personnel again at the day of my departure.\r\n\r\nWhen arriving at Narita airport March 25th, I was informed that my request, although being registered in the computer file, could not be complied with. I offered to pay for an upgrade to Business class but I was told that I would have to buy a completely new ticket, which would have cost me about 3,500 Euros, which therefore was out of consideration for me.\r\n\r\nIronically to say, when entering the plane I had to realize that the seats in the emergency rows had been assigned by young passengers without any physical handicaps. \r\n\r\nI have to explicitly mention, however, that while on the plane, the German-speaking cabin attendants responsible for the respective seat rows, especially Ms Dernbach, did whatever they could in order to ease my situation. This resulted in making it possible for me to use a different seat next to a free seat, so that some space was gained for me – at least as long as the plane was on the ground.\r\n\r\nHowever, after a while passengers were informed to leave the plane due to an engine fault, and finally, after four hours of waiting in Narita airport, to enter a different plane. I was much surprised to be informed by the cabin attendants that in the meantime ground personnel had assigned my “interim seat” to a Japanese gentleman and I was asked to go back to my original torture – for the next 13 hours to come. Obviously, the purser of this flight – much contrary to the junior cabin attendants – was not ready to change anything about this.\r\n
